Do I really need an editor?
An editor is an integral part of the publishing/production team, contributing to the overall quality of the final product.
Many people think that editing is a job any English major can do right out of college or that authors can edit their own work. We have found neither to be the case. That great thinker Anonymous was right when she said, “Editing your own work is like removing your own tonsils—possible but painful.”
Editing is a craft and an ongoing learning process about our language. An editor’s main job is to be the readers’ advocate—to make sure that what the author is saying will be clearly understood by the intended audience. Editors do not impose their will or opinions or feelings on a work but rather bring out the best in the material while maintaining the author’s style and “voice.”
